California Drivers Reminded About Safe Driving In Work Zones

Now that the weather is getting nice again it seems like road construction is everywhere. Highways around California already have enough traffic problems without the added hassle and delay of driving through road construction and repair work.

In addition to being an annoyance, work zones can actually be dangerous. In 2009 there were 667 deaths and more than 30,000 injuries due to construction zone accidents in the United States. That's why this week has been designated "National Work Zone Awareness Week."

The national campaign is designed to remind drivers in every state about the dangers of driving through work zones. Safety tips and training courses are offered to help keep drivers and workers safe.

California is one of many states in which drivers face increased fines for traffic violations in work zones. Many drivers might assume that these laws are in place only to protect construction workers. However, consider that 85 percent of those killed in work zone accidents are drivers and their passengers. Everyone has a vested interest in safe driving in work zones.

Some of the tips for safe driving include staying alert and paying attention to road signs. Drivers are especially encouraged to refrain from distracted driving while in a work zone. Finally, slow down, keep a safe distance from the car ahead of you and try to keep your patience at all times.

Following these tips will greatly reduce the risk of a construction zone accident, but it is also important to remember that accidents are sometimes the fault of the road crew. Car accidents can be the result of poorly-marked zones, narrow traffic lanes or even tools and equipment left near the side of the road.

We can't control the conditions in which we drive, but we can control how we drive. Because we know that construction zones are a common place for car accidents to occur, we should remember to drive safely - this week and every week.
